Last Friday we were thrilled to welcome players from the 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl American Team to help us work on a home in Lynwood as part of the NFL Players Association’s One Team, One Community program day of service.

The bus pulled up to the home and over 40 strong football players walked off ready to tackle the work and make a difference.  We kicked things off with an overview of how HFH GLA is rehabilitating foreclosed homes in partnership with cities like Lynwood.  We also explained how homeowners work on their homes and help pay for their homes with “sweat equity.” The players were so gracious and I could tell they were moved when they heard from partner homeowner Ana and her daughter who will live in a home much like the one they were working on.

Our construction team prepared a great day for the players.  We tasked them to complete a wooden fence around the perimeter of the back yard and demolish an old chain link fence in the front of the home.  We also had a rehab home next door, which needed its fence sealed.  We knew these guys would complete all the work in no time and they did not disappoint!

When you have this kind of muscle, you definitely take advantage, so we enlisted their help to move large items such as lumber, bags of bark and scrap fencing, which they made look easy! In addition to their hard work on the ground, they also did a great job “sharing the good” via Twitter!

It was over before we knew it and as the guys boarded the bus for their next appointment, we thanked them for their hard work and cheered them on for their Collegiate Bowl game the next day.  We know this won’t be the last we see of these great players – on and off the field!
